A coat of arms typically consists of several layers of tincture: First, the background is painted. Then, some main figure is painted in a different tincture. Last, some parts of the figure are painted in a third layer. As the coat of arms of Namur shows, there could even more layers above it. Look at these coat of arms schemata.
