Lesson 4. Learn that a coat of arms is painted level by level

A coat of arms typically consists of several layers of tincture: First, the background is painted. Then, some main figure is painted in a different tincture. Last, some parts of the figure are painted in a third layer. As the coat of arms of Namur shows, there could even more layers above it.

The rightmost: plain azur. The next: Azur a cross- gules. The next: Azur a cross- gules four crosses crosslets argent. The next: Azur a cross- gules four crosses crosslets argent and debruised by a bend or. The leftmost: Azur a cross- gules four crosses crosslets argent and debruised by a bend or three trees green, tree trunc sable. Not always it is as easy as this. Sometimes the layers do not overlap.
