Coat of arms show tinctures. Often, they alone characterize the position of the owner.

Look at these coat of arms schemata. Understand that there are only 7 tinctures: or (gold, yellow), argent (silver, white), gules (red), azure (blue), vert (green), sable (black) and purple. (Note that the golden and the argent shields are intended to show right a really gold resp. silver and left yellow resp. white. The colors of the gif-Image are somehow strange.)
